On Repeat: Wale - The Black N Gold (feat. Sam Sparro)
Last week Wale released the free mixtape "More About Nothing" (available here), a sequel of sorts to his 2008 Seinfeld-themed "Mixtape About Nothing" that continues to sit comfortably in my mixtape pantheon. The interesting thing about this release, is that it somehow reconciles Wale's pop sensibilities from his disappointing Attention Deficit with the ferocity and verbal gymnastics of his mixtapes. The result is an amalgam of fantastic rhymes with glowing guest spots and hum-worthy choruses. Songs like The War with Daniel Meriweather and The Posse Cut stack up favorably with some of his best work, but perhaps the crown jewel of entire tape is The Black N Gold; a furiously buzzing stomper that finds Wale stuffing double the words on a beat most rappers could barely catch up to. Match this with Sam Sparro's breezy chorus, and you have a song that in a perfect world would be firmly entrenched atop the Billboard Top 40. I'll settle for you just giving it a listen.
